What was your impression of India?
We were very young and had no preconceptions... we wore khadi kurtas and lungis, trying to blend in, but of course it was obvious enough we were foreigners and the swarms of beggars at first was a shock (for example, when getting off the bus in remote villages). But we did learn to appreciate the deep spiritual culture of India and how that enables so many to live richly fulfilling lives in the midst of material poverty.

We both were big fans of Indian food, thanks to the Hare Krishna Temple in Portland, so that was a daily pleasure. We stayed in the Hotel Vikas in Paharganj and particularly enjoyed the chapatti wallah next door and the dahi wallah on the corner and the burfi at the sweet shop down the block. Our main diet was mangos with dahi and chapatti. We were not much interested in cannabis much less any other drugs. I was naïve about hard drugs and when some sketchy character asked to borrow my enamel mug for 'fixing' I loaned it to him... then when Steve found out, he immediately went and retrieved it for me.

When we were in Kainchi near Neem Karoli's ashram there was hemp growing everywhere, so I dried some and would take a puff from time to time. But really it was the books that had the most interest for us. I remember carrying around the Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa, The Book and The Way of Zen by Alan Watts, the Diamond Sutra, and the Dharma Bums by (Jack) Kerouac.

What was Steve like when he was in India?
I think we were both pretty low key about expectations... it was a bit of a disappointment that when we got to the Neem Karoli ashram it was basically deserted - after Neem Karoli had passed earlier in the year, the crowds of western hippies and seekers were encouraged to disperse and they did! Then we made a long trek up a huge dry riverbed to an ashram of Hariakhan Baba, a reincarnating avatar as the story went. It was a long difficult trek then we had to climb a hundred-plus steps up a cliff to get to the ashram. The Hariakhan Baba we encountered was surprisingly young, and accessible enough, but he didn't strike either of us as being particularly profound. He did give us both 'secret' spiritual names... I regret now that I wasn't keeping a travel journal and can't remember mine!

What did you and Steve take back from India that stayed with you?
It seems in retrospect that we spent a lot of time on endless long hot crowded bus rides from Delhi to Uttar Pradesh and back, then up to Himachal Pradesh and back. We enjoyed our trip to the hill town of Manali, which was burdened with many Tibetan refugees at the time due to the Chinese occupation of Tibet. We visited many temples, especially in Delhi where during the later part of the summer it was too hot to go out during the day but we'd go for long walks at night. I think what stayed with both of us was an appreciation for the rich culture of India and the huge contrast between opulence and poverty to be found there. The most memorable incident was probably when we were making the day-long hike back from the Hariakhan Baba ashram and a violent thunderstorm caught us out in the open with no place to take shelter. We were huddling under our loincloths from the pelting rain, afraid we'd get hit by lightning... happy when we got back to the nearest village that evening.

How was Steve influenced, if at all, by the experience?

I think the trip influenced us both in a general sense of broadening our experience of life on earth and putting our lives in the US in a wider perspective. Neither of us found a 'guru' or had a 'miracle story' or an encounter with someone with advanced yogic powers but I would say that wasn't particularly a disappointment. Steve's return date was several weeks before mine so I went up to Dalhousie and took back-to-back 10-day Vipassana retreats with Goenka, which was a great experience and has served me well throughout my life. Steve was mostly drawn to Zen meditation and he went to the zendo in Los Altos regularly after his return from India ...

Night and Day Nine:
Siddhidatri - She Who is of great spiritual Powers and knowledge
Siddhidatri begins at Sunset October 5 and ends at Sunset October 6.

Siddhidatri: Siddhidatri means the giver of siddhis (magical or spiritual powers for the control of self, others and the forces of nature). It is said in Devipuran that the Supreme God, Lord Shiva received all of these powers by propitiating the Maha Shakti. The Goddess is sometimes shown atop a lion and sometimes atop a lotus. She is shown as having four arms, which hold a club, a conch shell and a lotus. The fourth hand forms a gesture of granting. Siddhidatri is considered to be the most powerful of all the nine forms of Durga.
Durga is said to be extraordinarily beautiful; she does not use her beauty for seduction, but rather entrapment. She entices her victims and then defeats them. She rides a lion, and it appears whenever her strengths are needed. Her role is not that of creator, but rather that of a maintainer: she maintains cosmic order by defeating demons that plague the universe.
Durga is not only a powerful force for cosmic order but also a protector of her devotees. She listens to her devotees and attends to their needs.
Goddess Durga keeps up the play of the divine universal God through the three attributes of Nature, namely, Satva (equilibrium and serenity), Rajas (dynamism and kinesis) and Tamas (ignorance and inertia). Knowledge, peace, lust, anger, greed, egoism and pride, all are Her forms. Maha Saraswati is Her Sattviki Shakti or power of equilibrium. Maha Lakshmi is Her Rajasik Shakti or power of activity. And Maha Kali is Her Tamsik Shakti the power of destruction. All these are feminine forms.

Shiva's power is Shakti, the dynamic creative mother aspect of the Godhead. It is she who creates and at the time of dissolution, it is she who swallows her own creation. Shakti cannot exist without Shiva and Shiva cannot personify without Shakti.

Our beloved Mother, Saraswati, the goddess of learning, knowledge, music, speech and all the creative arts. She is the Flowing-One. She represents the union of power and intelligence from which organized creation arises. Saraswati possesses all the learnings of the the Vedas, scriptures, dancing, musical power and poetry. She revealed language and writing to man. Her origin is the lost Vedic river Saraswati. This is the source of her profound connection to fluidity in any aspect (water, speech, thought...). She is wisdom, fortune, intelligence, nourishment, brilliance, contentment, splendor and devotion.

As I told you on Day 8, the last Havan of the Navaratri is when participants bring their personal instruments of work for a blessing. These could include pen, office stuff, laptop, stethoscope, musical instrument, or anything that relates to a person's life work or career. Saraswati offers a special blessing for abundance and prosperity within this work. Blessings to all!

Navaratri Eight:

Night and Day Eight:
Mahagauri - The Great White Goddess
Mahagauri begins at Sunset on October 4 and ends at Sunset on October 5.

Goddess Saraswati is generally depicted with four arms (some pictures may show only two arms),

wearing a white sari and seated on a white lotus. She holds a book and a mala in Her rear two hands,

while the front two hands are engaged in the playing of a lute (veena). Her right leg is shown slightly

pushing against Her left leg. She uses a swan as Her vehicle.

There is a peacock by Her side gazing at Her. This symbolism illustrates the following spiritual ideas:

a.. The lotus is a symbol of the Supreme Reality, and a white lotus also denotes supreme knowledge. By sitting on a lotus, Saraswati signifies that She is Herself rooted in the Supreme Reality, and symbolizes supreme knowledge. The white color symbolizes purity and knowledge. The white sari that the Goddess is wearing denotes that She is the embodiment of pure knowledge.


b.. The four arms denote Her omnipresence and omnipotence. The two front arms indicate Her activity in the physical world and the two back arms signify Her presence in the spiritual world. The four hands represent the four elements of the inner personality. The mind (manas) is represented by the front right hand, the intellect (buddhi) by the front left hand, the conditioned consciousness (chitta) by the rear left hand, and the ego (ahankara) by the rear right hand.


c.. The left side of the body symbolizes the qualities of the heart and the right side symbolizes activities of the mind and intellect. A book in the rear left hand signifies that knowledge acquired must be used with love and kindness to promote prosperity of mankind.


d.. The mala signifies concentration, meditation, and contemplation, leading to samadhi, or union with God. A mala in the rear right hand representing ego conveys that true knowledge acquired with love and devotion melts the ego and results in liberation (moksha) of the seeker from the bondage to the physical world.


e.. The Goddess is shown playing a musical instrument that is held in Her front hands, which denote mind and intellect. This symbol conveys that the seeker must tune his mind and intellect in order to live in perfect harmony with the world. Such harmonious living enables the individual to utilize acquired knowledge for the welfare of all mankind.


f.. Two swans are depicted on the left side of the Goddess. A swan is said to have a sensitive beak that enables it to distinguish pure milk from a mixture of milk and water. A swan, therefore, symbolizes the power of discrimination, or the ability to discriminate between right and wrong or good and bad. Saraswati uses the swan as Her carrier. This indicates that one must acquire and apply knowledge with discrimination for the good of mankind. Knowledge that is dominated by ego can destroy the world.


g.. A peacock is sitting next to Saraswati and is anxiously waiting to serve as Her vehicle. A peacock depicts unpredictable behavior as its moods can be influenced by the changes in the weather. Saraswati is using a swan as a vehicle and not the peacock. This signifies that one should overcome fear, indecision, and fickleness in order to acquire true knowledge.

Navaratri Seven: Kalaratri - Kali Night of no MoonKalaratri is the one who destroys ignorance and removes darkness. She is also known as Shubhamkari.
In this form she is believed to have licked the blood of demon Rakta Beeja who had the capacity to bring out thousand demons from a drop of blood spilt from his body.

This is the most violent form of Durga. This form primarily depicts that life also has dark side – the violent Mother Nature-- and creates havoc and removes all dirt.

The goddess called Night of Time, Kalaratri, represents nirvana.

What is Nirvana?
Nirvana literally means "The blowing out of a candle". The fire that goes out
does not pass away, but merely becomes invisible by passing into a conscious experience of union with All That Is. It refers to entry into another mode of existence and experience. The fire that comes forth is the fire of the self.

This is the "emptiness" which is referred to in many of the teachings. It is an
ideal condition of rest, harmony, stability, or joy; the ability to consciously
pause the mind. Om Namah Shivaya.

Babaji tells us that when we feel the 'emptiness' inside--like a black hole-- we have the urge to fill it with the Unreal (emotions, relationships, wealth, power, knowledge) just to avoid the emptiness. Babaji tells us, also, that the "emptiness" is where He resides. He is the No Thing and the No Body.

Enjoy and embrace the emptiness of the Seventh Night of Navaratri.
When it is time to fill it, do so consciously with Truth, Simplicity, Love, Service, and the Name of God.

This is about receiving the proper things you need to make your life happy and comfortable.


To bring something truly special into your life you may consider saying this prayer to Shri Lakshmi each day for 30 days. The requests for cows, horses, and servants can be updated to the needs of modern day life (unless you live on a farm and this is your need.) This is considered to be one of the most powerful prayers to Lakshmi:

Shri Sukta
O Jatavada! Bring Lakshmi (the Goddess of Wealth) of golden color to me, (bring her to me) who is remover of sins, who is (resplendent) with her garlands of (lotuses of) gold and silver, who is the source of pleasure like the moon (for the universe) and who possesses a lot of (wealth) gold, etc.(1)

O Jataveda! Bring me that Lakshmi who will not ever desert me and by whose grace I may get gold, cows, horses and sons together with other descendants. (2)

I invoke Goddess Sri (Lakshmi) who has the cavalry before her and the chariots (carried by horses) in the middle, who delights the world by the resounding trumpet of elephants (attending on her). May she be graceful to me and reside at my place forever! (3)

I invoke Sri, the blissful goddess, who is sweet-smiling, who lives in a hall of gold, who is full of compassion and drenched with it from the heart (due to the fact of being bathed by attending elephants or having risen from the milky ocean), who is resplendent at the seat of the lotus, is lotus-hued, and who bestows all pleasures to her devotees.(4)

I take refuge in Sri who is the effulgent one like the moon, who shines with the fame of herself, who is adored by the Gods like Indra, etc. Who is benevolent in offering gifts, who dwells in the middle of the lotus, who protects all (her devotees). May the poverty be removed from my end, (and for that) I invoke you, O Goddess Lakshmi.(5)

O (Lakshmi) of sun-like lustre! The Tree of the name Bilva was produced by your penance. May the fruits of that tree remove all our ignorance, distresses and other extrinsic things by (our) penance.(6)

O Mother Lakshmi! May the Gods like Indra, Kubera (friend of Mahadeva) come to me together with fame and gems. (Here the fame is Sati, the daughter of Daksa, and the gems are the friends of Kubera like Manibhadra) I am born in this world and may you (Kubera) give me fame and plenty for wealth.(7)

I destroy the poverty (Alakshmi) which is the cause of hunger and thirst, which is the elder sister of Laskshmi, and which is impure. O Goddess, please get the paucity of wealth from my abode obliterated and all the hurdles in the way of the acquisition of wealth be removed.(8)

I invoke Sri, who is to be gotten by offering fragrant flowers, who is unassailable, who has abundance of crops and wealth and cattle, and who is supreme of all beings. (9)

O, Lakshmi! May we realize all the wishes of our hearts and willingness, the truth of our words, the wealth of cattle (milk, curd, etc.) and forms of food. May Goddess bring me fame and wealth too. (10)

O Kardama! Come dwell in me. Make Sri, who is the Universal Mother and who is adored with a garland of lotuses, dwell in my family. (11)

(It is said that Lord Varuna produces oily substances, i.e., beautiful things)
(The beauty in substances is known as Lakshmi. She has three sons--Kardam, Ciklita and Sruti. Here Ciklita is prayed: O Ciklita (son of Lakshmi)! Come to dwell in my house, and, not only you but make your mother (also Mother of The Universe), Lakshmi, also live in my abode.(12)

O Lord Agni, (God of Fire)! Bring to me Lakshmi, who is very kind, who has elephants around her pouring water on her (for her bath), who is the goal of sacrificial rites, who is tawny-hued, who is decked with a garland of lotuses, who is lustrous like the moon and thus enlightening the living beings and also possessed of plenty of wealth.(13)

O Jataveda! Bring to me Mother Lakshmi, who is always compassionate to her devotees, who punishes the wicked ones, who is golden (exquisitely beautiful) color, who puts on garland of gold, who is wealth (herself), and who makes the whole world illumine like the sun. (14)

O Jataveda! Bring to me Lakshmi who will never leave me and by whose grace I may get plenty of gold, prosperity, cows, horses, servants and other descendants. (15)

One who aspires for the attainment of Lakshmi, should regularly, in a sanctified and determined way, offer the cow-ghee in oblation and recite all the 15 verses of Srisuktam. (16)

Skandamata - Mother of Skanda, the leader of armies against evil
Skandamata begins at Sunset October 1 and ends at Sunset on October 2.

Skanda Mata: Skanda Mata literally means the mother of Skanda. Skanda was the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati and was the leader of the army of gods. The goddess is shown as having four hands, two of which carry lotuses while two are in defending and granting gestures. She is shown sitting on a lion with her son Skanda in her lap.


Lakshmi, by nature and name, means Fortune. From a religious point of view, the Goddess herself is considered one who guides people to Fortune and, especially, a deity who has authority to grant and deliver Fortune. Fortune is seen as both material and spiritual.

Lakshmi can help you focus positive energy in the general direction of material and spiritual wealth. Here's how she can assist you in having more prosperity, good health, love, success and joy in life:
Before all else, clarify current reality and make new choices:

Lakshmi flows to structure, cleanliness and clarity. Consider these three areas in your life: What in your life makes you feel abundant? What in your life makes you feel lacking? What do you dream about as the perfect life for you both spiritually and materially/physically?

The first list will help you get a sense of the good fortune and prosperity that already exists in your life. The second list will help you to see the things in your life that deplete and drag you down. Writing them down is an effective way to bring them up to your subconscious mind so you can be aware of what is in the way of your prosperity. The third list is the first step to turning goals into reality. Putting your dreams and goals on paper helps you to organize your thoughts about what you would like to create - and it gives Lakshmi a sense of the direction you want to head toward. Next step is to bring Her presence more fully in your life.

Keep Her Image near you: Like any Goddess, Lakshmi likes to be noticed and appreciated! She likes for you to call Her Name.
Om Hrim Shrim Klim is a mantra of sounds that are pleasing to Her.

Connect to her through semi-precious stones and shiny jewelry. Light pink rose quartz is the perfect way to say I love Lakshmi. Soft, feminine and heart-centered, pink crystals conjure her aspects as a Love and Beauty Goddess. Green stones bring forth the energy of prosperity. And shiny jewelry and coins call her in closer, because she loves things that sparkle and shine.

Some Laksmi 'experts' tell us to remove all sandalwood scent and beads from Her space while honoring Her or doing special prayers/pujas to Laksmi. Use only crystal or the Lotus seed malas for Her mantras.

These refinements are just ways to show more attention and a willingness to GIVE what She 'likes' rather than only begging for HER attention and trying to GET things from Her.
(It's the same with the people in your life, isn't it? To stay in balance, we must GIVE and RECEIVE. The Giving becomes the Receiving when we reach the balanced state of awareness.)

Do you know people who give you gifts that THEY want instead of what you want? It always makes you wonder, doesn't it? :)
Honor Lakshmi privately: Know Lakshmi can hear your prayers from wherever you may be. To evoke Her energy of good fortune:1.. Light a pink or green candle in Lakshmi's honor and bring an
offering of a cup of milk, yogurt, honey and/or fruit.
2.. Think for a moment about what good fortune means to you.
Perhaps,for you, good fortune begins with a sense of peace and well being within and has little to do with material goods or money. Or maybe you have a financial issue, which, once resolved, will make you feel more fortunate. You can pray to make your most heartfelt dreams come alive.
3.. Evoke Lakshmi's assistant, Lord Ganesh, remover of Obstacles, by repeating "Om Ganapataye Namah" three times. Ask the Goddess for her help. GoodFortune on all levels is her domain.
4.. When you are done, thank her for her blessings and enjoy some of the food that you brought as an offering, prasad.

Navaratri Four:
LAKSHMI: The second set of three days is devoted to Lakshmi, the Goddess of Prosperity, wife of Vishnu;

it is a time of preservation and taking care of things or acquiring what is necessary to make your life

full of prosperity and fulfillment.

This is about receiving the proper things you need to make your life happy and comfortable (whatever that means to you).

It is interesting to note, in our present social climate, that those who have achieved great heights of material wealth

often seek a life of much more simplicity. Presently, SIMPLICITY is becoming more of a reality, whether CHOSEN or FORCED.

All is moving toward simplicity, and feeling like we voluntarily choose it is much more comforting.

Simplicity's greatest quality is peacefulness within, while still supplying adequate requirements. It does not have to mean scarcity or 'scare-city.'
Night and Day Four:
Kusmanda - She Who brings happiness
Kusmanda begins at Sunset September 30 and ends at Sunset on October 1.

Shri Lakshmi is personified not only as the goddess of fortune and wealth but also as an embodiment of loveliness, grace and charm. She is worshipped as a goddess who grants both worldly prosperity as well as liberation from the cycle of life and death.

Lore has it that Lakshmi arose out of the sea of milk, the primordial cosmic ocean, bearing a red lotus in her hand. Each member of the divine triad- Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (creator, preserver and destroyer respectively)- wanted to have her for himself. Shiva's claim was refused for he had already claimed the Moon, Brahma had Saraswati, so Vishnu claimed her and she was born and reborn as his consort during all of his ten incarnations.

The most striking feature of Lakshmi is her persistent association with the lotus. The meaning of the lotus in relation to Shri-Lakshmi refers to purity and spiritual power. Rooted in the mud but blossoming above the water, completely uncontaminated by the mud, the lotus represents spiritual perfection and authority. To be seated upon or associated with the lotus suggests that the being in question: God, Buddha, or human being-has transcended the limitations of the finite world (the mud of existence, as it were) and floats freely in a sphere of purity and spirituality. Shri-Lakshmi thus suggests more than the fertilizing powers of moist soil and the mysterious powers of growth. She suggests a perfection or state of refinement that transcends the material world.

Brahmacharini - She Who remains celibate
Brahmacharini begins at Sunset  September 28,and ends at sunset September 29.

Important Kali points:
Kali only destroys that which was not created on a solid foundation.
Kali stood for Existence, which meant Becoming because all her world was an eternal living flux from which all things rose and disappeared again, in endless cycles. As a Mother, Kali was called Treasure-House of Compassion (karuna), Giver of Life to the world, the Life of all lives. She was the fount of every kind of love, which flowed into the world only through her agents on earth, women.
Some of Kali's older names found their way into the Bible. As Tara, the earth, she became Terah, mother of the Hebrew ancestral spirits called "teraphim". The Latin Terra, meaning "Mother Earth," said to be interchangeable with Venus.

Indo-European languages branched from the root of Sanskrit, said to be Kali's invention. She created the magic letters of the Sanskrit alphabet and inscribed them on the rosary of skulls around her neck. The letters were magic because they stood for primordial creative energy expressed in sound - Kali's mantras brought into being the very things whose names she spoke for the first time, in her holy language. In short. Kali's worshippers originated the doctrine of the Logos creative Word. Kali's letters magically combined the elements, which were previously separate as fiery-airy (male) or watery-earthy (female) forces. The former were "cruel"; the latter "benevolent. "

Though called "the One," Kali was always a trinity. Her three forms were manifested in many ways: in the three sections of the cosmos (heaven, earth, andthe underworld), the three stages of life, the three trimesters of pregnancy, and so on. Women represented her spirit in mortal flesh. "The Divine Mother first appears in and as Her worshipper's earthly mother, then as his wife; thirdly as Kalika, She reveals Herself in old age, disease and death."
Kali's three forms appeared in the sacred colors known as "Gunas": white for the Virgin, red for the Mother, black for the Crone, symbolizing birth, life, death. Black was Kali's fundamental color as the Destroyer, for it meant the formless condition she assumed between creations, when all the elements were dissolved in her primordial substance. "As white, yellow, and other colors all disappear in black, in the same way ... all beings enter Kali."

Kali is the Goddess who takes away darkness. She destroys all impurities, consumes all inequities, and purifies her devotees with the sincerity of Her love.Now, the process of expressing a yearning for Kali truly manifests. Begin by entering with focused breath on the heart, and then call Her forth:
